Suicidality

Suicide Prevention Australia

Suicide Prevention Australia is the national peak body for the suicide prevention sector. We exist to provide a clear, collective voice for suicide prevention, so that together we can save lives. We believe that through collaboration and shared purpose, we can work towards our ambition of a world without suicide.

The Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP)

The Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP) is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Suicide Prevention and winner of the 14th Annual LiFE Award recognising excellence in suicide prevention research.

AISRAP provides education and accredited training for health and allied professionals, offering postgraduate programs in suicidology  (Certificate, Master and Master with Honours). The Institute manages a  research facility providing outpatient treatment for people with suicidal ideation and/or recent history of suicidal behaviour (Life  Promotion Clinic). Each arm of AISRAP (Research/Clinical/Training) is  important in providing a comprehensive understanding of suicidal behaviour.

Mates in Construction

MATES is a charity established in 2008 to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers.

MATES provides suicide prevention through community development  programs on sites, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. We serve the construction industry in Queensland and Northern Territory, New South Wales, South Australia and  Western Australia, the Energy industry in Queensland and New South Wales, and nationally to the Mining industry.

MATES was established in response to a major report on suicide (the ‘AISRAP Report’) within the Queensland Commercial Building and Construction Industry. This report found that suicide rates in the industry were higher than the Australian average for men, and that youth  suicide within the industry could be as much as 2.38 times more common  than among other young Australian men.

The MATES program is based on the simple idea that suicide is everyone’s business. If the building and construction industry in Australia is to improve the mental health and well-being of workers and reduce suicide, then it cannot be left to mental health professionals:
everyone in the industry must play their part.

Working for the construction industry in general, MATES is independent of employers and unions and never works directly for an employer. Programs are delivered across the industry regardless of  employer or union affiliation.

Standby Support After Suicide

StandBy is accessible seven days a week, providing free face-to face and/or telephone support at a time and place that is best for each individual.

The program offers coordinated evidence-based support and resources (including connections to local services and groups) that is individualised for each person’s unique circumstance. This support is continued for up to two years to ensure those that engage with StandBy are not alone and receive ongoing support.

StandBy is guided by local advisory groups – which includes community stakeholders as well as those with lived experience. StandBy National is informed by our National Lived Experience Advisory Group.

StandBy builds community preparedness and resilience through extensive training to community and professional groups to ensure effectiveness and that duplicated effort is avoided. The program is also ideally placed to offer a settings-based approach, providing group support after a suicide for schools, workplaces and community groups.
