Hymba Yumba Independent School
Hymba Yumba Independent School (HYIS) was founded in 2011 by Uncle Albert Holt and has been built upon the traditions of Indigenous culture, spiritualty and identity.
Situated in Springfield on the traditional land of the Jagera, Yuggera and Ugarapul people, the name of the school is from the Bidjara language group and was gifted to the school by founder, Uncle Albert Holt. Hymba meaning the development of skills in listening, reflecting, evaluating and planning and Yumba is the building and support for learning; the building of school and classroom routines and the building of community.

Diverse Voices

Deadly Choices
We aim to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make healthy choices for themselves and their families – to stop smoking, to eat good food and exercise daily. Deadly Choices also encourages our people to access their local Community Controlled Health Service and complete an annual ‘Health Check’.
In Aboriginal slang, if something is ‘deadly’ it is great. As such a Deadly Choice is a good choice, and we encourage community to make such choices each day.

The PLUM and HATS are simple checklists. They help health and early childhood workers ask family the right questions to find out how bub’s listening and yarning skills are growing.
Listening and yarning are skills bub learns as they grow, from family and others around them. The more practice bub has, the easier they grow these skills up. They are skills for life: children need them for school and beyond.

Baby Coming You Ready? (BCYR) is a digital platform that has ‘cracked the code’ to overcome communication barriers between Aboriginal women and their health care provider during pregnancy and after baby arrives.
Designed by Aboriginal community and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal professionals, it provides ‘wrap-around’ solutions to the many barriers impacting trusting engagement, effective assessment, routine screens and effective woman-centered care.

What were you wearing?
Indigenous led What Were You Wearing? Australia was created to help victim-survivors every day, not just once a year. Since then, a team of dedicated volunteers has helped the organisation grow and expand to multiple states, with influence in communities Australia-wide.
In 2023, we amended RSA laws to include mandatory drink spiking prevention training for bar and security staff across NSW. In April 2024, we held nationwide rallies to fight against family, sexual, and domestic violence, with 40+ volunteers, and 100,000 attendees across 17 locations.
